Open Therapy
Everywhere. And for everyone.
Mental health sessions - psychiatry, psychology
and psychotherapy in unexpected spaces & locations.
Open Therapy is an innovative project, pioneering in Portugal and globally, offering psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy sessions in different, unexpected, and inspiring spaces, deconstructing the traditional paradigm of access to mental health services.
We work on accessibility
in three ways:
Space
All public and open spaces can be therapeutic and meeting places to work on your mental health and well-being
Price
All sessions cost €35, and we continuously work on partnerships to subsidise this price.
Human Rights
People are at the centre of our project. We embrace diversity of individuals, nationalities, and other specificities.
The Project
Created in 2019 to develop new opportunities for accessibility in mental health, the project is organised into hubs and present in inspiring, attractive, and non-stigmatising locations such as museums, libraries, parks, and even a football stadium.
Therapy sessions take place as part of the regular therapeutic process, held in partner spaces during their normal hours, and remain completely confidential.
Why?
Mental health and wellbeing are not just individual problems but also community issues, many of which originate from the way we live in society.
In Portugal and in many locations around the world, mental health is still not accessible to everyone. Waiting lists in the public system are long, and private services are often unaffordable. Culturally, there is still stigma around the need for treatment and/or support as a normal practice within overall health.
More information:
Open Therapy currently has three hubs: in the Beato parish at the Ar.Co art school (Lisbon), at the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (Lisbon), and in the municipality of Cascais, present in various locations such as the Conde Castro Guimarães Museum, Marechal Carmona Park, Casa da Horta Library, and Casal Saloio in São Domingos de Rana.
We work as a network, with small groups of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychotherapists. All our professionals are independent and registered, if necessary, with the Health Regulatory Authority, with complaint books available.
Open Therapy / Manicómio works like the “Tinder” of mental health, connecting a person’s request with a mental health professional. From there, scheduling and conversations are arranged directly between the two parties.
Each session costs €35 (psychiatry, individual therapy, couples therapy, or family therapy).
Our sessions are for children/adolescents, adults, and seniors. We create hubs with professionals that respond to local challenges, whether related to target populations or specific therapeutic approaches.
Núcleo Beato / Ar.Co: consultas.beato@manicomio.pt
