Biography

Born in 1969, in Anadia. Anabela began in the art studio of the Lisbon Psychiatric Hospital Centre (CHPL) in 2013. Her sculpture Urso integrou a exposição coletiva Deslocado Urso was included in the group exhibition Deslocado (2015) at Pavilion 31 (CHPL) in Lisbon, alongside Brazilian artists such as Alexandre Baltazar and Rafael Uzai. In the same space, she presented several sculptures in the group exhibition Entrevista (2016) with Emir Kusturica. Already integrated into the Manicómio collective, she participated in the group exhibitions Insubordinar Insubordinar (2019) at Espaço Fidelidade Chiado 8 Contemporary Art, in Lisbon, and Incómodo and Incómodo (2020) at the Municipal Museum of Faro.

She held her first solo exhibition Os Monstros at Casa Família Oliveira Guimarães, in Penela (2019), O dia em que perdi o pé at the Bordalo Pinheiro Museum, Lisbon. She was invited artist at the XV International Biennial of Artistic Ceramics of Aveiro in 2021, with the solo exhibition Quarto EscuroThat same year, she exhibited at the Museu de São Roque, in Lisbon, as part of the group project O Outro como epifania do belo, participando em 2022 em Limiar da Trilogia, no espaço da Fidelidade Arte, e em 2023 em Perdido mas não tanto, na Casa Fernando Pessoa, em Lisboa.

Urso, an emblematic work by the artist made with blankets recovered from the former Júlio de Matos Hospital, was recently exhibited at MAAT.
